I’ve raved about “Under the Tuscan Sun” (the book….NOT the movie, in which I assume you were as disappointed as I) since I 1st read it ten years ago (which was immediately followed by the 2nd time I read it…4 hours later) and which was the underlying reason I accompanied my then girl-friend, now wife, to Italy….and mainly Cortona (where my wife bought paintings).
The American girl we met on the piazza (did she own Enoteca Molesini??? I can’t remember) sternly admonished me against finding your house and coming to pay my respects (if you had been there) as she said you had been over-whelmed by “visitors”.
But I actually did find Bramisole and now regret not at least attempting to say “Hi”.
We’ve traveled somewhat extensively thru Italy and Sicily and have enjoyed it tremendously…and look forward to this fall when we’ll be in Venice on our way East down the Adriatic ending up in Greece.
In any event, it was your experience which underlies our not infrequent discussions about buying a house in Italy…or S. France.

Read in the interview that you have fallen in love with Poland. I did the samne when I went to Krakow last fall with my husband. For many years I’ve been travelling to Italy, in April I’ll be going to Tuscany and Firenze for the first time.

To Britt-Arnhild–I absolutely loved seeing the Krakow photos and reading your blog about your trip. Yes, the coffee shops there are
the most inviting of anywhere–and the pastries too. Such old world atmosphere. My husband Ed is a coffee fanatic and thought Polish coffee was the best outside
of Italy. I wrote an article for Smithsonian Magazine on our trip there. I’m sure it’s in their archives–September 2009 issue. My husband
is taking his three sisters there in October to visit their family home ground. Krakow! A very thrilling city. We liked Torun and Gdansk too.

I just finished reading “Under The Tuscan Sun” for the first time, and absolutely loved it. I can’t wait to start “Bella Tuscany” which is already part of my literary collection. I love the recipes that you included in “Under The Tuscan Sun” and recently invested in a pestle and mortar which has cranked out several batches of basil pesto in the short time that I have owned it. It was very satisfying and relaxing to pound away at the ingredients whilst watching the 2010 Winter Olympics! I have earmarked several of the other recipes for future experimentation.
I confess that I saw the movie before I discovered your book, and although it is not very faithful to the book, it is still one of my favorite movies. The landscapes that were captured on film leave my heart yearning for the real thing. I visited Italy several years ago and I understand your passion and affection for that beautiful country and its vivid and rich culture. Your descriptions of Cortona and the surrounding regions are so vivid that I can almost taste the flavors of the wines, the olive oil, and every other delicious recipe that you detailed. I can’t wait to try a Brunello when finances permit! I could quite easily settle in Italy, at least for part of the year.
Hopefully one day your book tour will come to Michigan so that I can thank you in person. In the meantime, I will certainly visit my local Borders to locate a copy. I can quite honestly say that I’m now a Bramasole addict.

Hi Frances. Thank you so much for writing me back. It is a heavy snow day here in Trondheim, Norway today. In a Norwegian snowday you are never actually snowed in, ploughing and showelling makes it available for us any time, and my husband has been out cross country skiing, right from our backdoor. I fought the snow yesterday to go downtown for my weekly coffee and writing time in my favorite cafe, and to buy mussels for last nights meal, but today I have made myself comfortable indoors with my books. And believe it or not
, I have reread the first chapter in A Year in the World, from Spain, and I am reading Lorca poems and a Lorca biography. Your reading hit something deep inside me, and I can reread you again and again.

By the way – my next travel, in late April, will be to Tuscany. I go to Italy at least once a year, and have travelled through Tuscany several times, but never stopped there. I will stay in an old monastery, and also three days in Firenze before I continue up to my beloved Venezia.

The minute i finished reading Every day in Tuscany (i read too fast!), i went back to page one and began again. i was laughing when you spoke about being able to hear the tourists on the road below Bramasole…i too was on that road in July of 2008 looking up at all the butterflies, watching someone with a blue SUV mowing the grass and crazily hoping for a glimpse of one of my favorite authors.
i am planning a trip to the small fishing villages just south of naples in october. do you have any suggestions? i was thinking of pisciotta?

HI Frances – I was prompted to write after (finally) reading Bella Tuscany because I was surprised at the mention of the name of your cat, Sister. We had a doberman named Sister and we just put her to sleep this past October. I’ve never heard anyone else use the name – I love it!!

Your bravery encouraged us to buy a ‘wreck’ in France which we have enjoyed working on and continue to do so still, after 6 years!We battle to improve our French continuously and strive to be better Europeans.I didn’t intend to have a garden abroad (too difficult) but already there are fruit trees and bushes, vines and herbs that almost look after themselves. So thankyou again for the inspiration,I’m looking forward to reading ‘Everyday in Tuscany’ with a glass of wine under a cherry tree in Normandy shortly.

Enjoying reading about Signorelli in Orvieto, ecc. in your new book. Years ago spent my birthday in Orvieto,, and although they were restoring the Chapel I was able to go up on the scaffolding and look closely. Went to Monte Oliveto also but have yet to see others on the “Luca Trail.” Grazie for the itinerary. Sorry to have missed you at the Regulator but perhaps you’ll be reading in Chapel Hill sometime. I have a story to tell you about the lady in Seville–had the same experience, and wrote a short sketch, “The Port of Tangiers”, about it. I love Italia and we go sometimes there,but this year we go to Spain and I read again “around the world” to feel the same than you did. You have such glance on everything that read your book with a glass of “rosé de Provence” (excuse me but we are in France and it’s not to bad !! ) so read your book is the best medecine ! Did you ever come to Vallée de la Loire in France? You’d love it and particularly “Vallée du LOir ” close to it , very charming,If one day you want visit this part we’ll glad to have you in our home where a french writer named “Alfred de Musset” came sometimes in the past XIXth century and wrote a book name “Pierre et Camille” located here ! Bonjour! I visited the Loire Valley several years ago but will never forget the beauty of the region, the hospitality, and the beautiful chateaux. I think I was a little too young then to appreciate the wonderful wine, but I remember the wonderful food! I’m in the U.S. now, but part of me remains in the Loire.
