First Day of Spring

March 21st, 2010

Atlanta and New York were my stops this week.  Blissful weather in both places and I met many wonderful people. If you’re in or near Atlanta, the Botanical Garden, where I spoke, is such a serene place to wander.  My cousin is taking classes there in shade gardening and hydrangeas.  Several Dale Chihuly glass sculptures adorn the place, their vegetal glass shapes rivaling the flowers.

In New York, I stayed at the artful Gramercy Park Hotel. Danny Meyer’s newish restaurant there, Il Maialino served up a taste of Italy. The malfatti pasta with roasted pork was so tasty.  My editor had a toast for me at The Italian Wine Merchant, so I had a chance to meet Sergio Esposito (whose book Passion on the Vine I liked), and to have a sip of Italia.  The bottles on the shelves are displayed like art objects and the lighted votives between them give a little flame of religious fervor to selecting a good vino nobile for dinner.   At this gathering I was able to thank some of the committed and talented people who are behind publishing Every Day in Tuscany. At Barnes and Noble, I had brief visits with several old friends, including a childhood friend of my daughter.  One thing I love about the book tour is these surprise meeting.  My visit North ended at a library event in lovely New Canaan, presided over by the excellent Elm Street Books. Someone gave me two loaves of freshly baked bread, which we sampled in the car en route back to the city.

Yesterday, when I flew into Raleigh-Durham, I could see from the plane window the Bradford pears igniting the landscape below with their white abundance.   They have burst into bloom in my absence.   Driving home, I saw clumps of daffodils and a few purple-haze redbuds.  Now I have the afternoon before I fly out tomorrow for Powell’s in Portland, Oregon, then down the California coast, then to U of GA, U of FL, then Miami–two weeks of being a wandering minstrel.  All with carry-on. I must be a clever packer tonight!

Meanwhile, a few hours to remove dead leaves from a flower bed and to fertilize my gardenias.  Still too early to plant, but time to get ready.

Will there ever be a booktour in Europe, in Norway? If, or let me say when, you come here, I’ll take you to our small. simple cabin as an honored guest. Then I didn’t have to read your Tuscany books, you could tell me the stories while we sit on the terracce, sipping wine, watching the view. Be sure to come during the blueberry season:

    Dear Frances
I know that you visit yet France: is France on your current schedule tour ???
Reading Every Day life in Tuscany (pre-ordered to have it as soon as possible ;-) , I have catched your words :
” if I were a medieval woman weaving a medieval tapestry, the knowledge gleaned from living here would form my borders and backgrounds.Instead of procession of men with falcons on decorated horses, or a lady mincing along on a unicorn, there would be the iconic long table, the gathered friends, the servers and diners, all loved faces, and richly colored threads for the roses, the lemons, the twining bean, sunflowers, moonflower vine, and all the creatures who also are as at home as we are where we live. Above the scene, I’d stitch the golden disk of the sun and jagged rays.”

I love so much your tuscan chronicles and the “petite musique” of your prose. I am a french cross stitch designer so I have just tried to design a sampler to tell you my admiration and all the pleasure you gave me with your books and to say “Thanks you”.

( blurred picture at the end of the post)
In a very naive way, not at all realistic but not so far from medieval tapestry mille fleurs; to be stitched with silks threads.
If you like this modeste attempt (it is not a design to be published, it will be only for you – if you want it ) please email me

    Dear Francis,

I was delighted with the news of your new novel! I am really looking forward to your new book. I hope (and assume) that it is as inspiring as your other books. I can’t wait the shipment from the US. We are real Italy-lovers and your book ‘Under the Tuscan’ was (already some time ago) the last push we needed to buy a house close to Cortona to spend our holidays with our children in Italy to live the Italian life.
How about a tour to Europe (the cold, northern part like The Netherlands, Belgium) ?

Thank you for coming to Portland! It was amazing to hear you read an excerpt from your wonderful book and to meet you afterwards, though I was so excited that I forgot to tell you how much your lyrical books mean to me. The book is terrific; I am having a hard time putting it down, and I am glad to read you have returned to your Southern roots for part of the year. I hope the rest of the book tour goes well; take care and thanks again!

My husband is reading your book now! I hate I missed your book signing back in Durham. We were away on spring break with the boys. Charles has been perusing the recipes and has decided we should serve these to our guests this weekend! Can’t wait to try them out! Would love to see you and Ed. Please stop by Rapid Results next time you are in Durham! Happy Spring!

I am reading A Year in the World right now, and am savouring every word. I love all your books. One question, in Turkey you talked about reading the Aga Saga. I have been googling that. Are there any books in particular that you could recommend? I love British lit. Thank you for any help.

Roberta, the Aga Saga is just an English term for novels that center on women and home, named after the famous Aga stove that’s always on. Barbara Pym, Anita Brookner, Penelope Lively and Joanna Trollope are some of my favorites. I think the term is a bit condescending but these are fine writers. ciao–Frances

Frances, thank you for the pure joy of “Everyday in Tuscany.” I rushed out to buy it the day it was released and have just ten minutes ago finished it. Yet again, as all previous books – thank you – thank you for my nightly armchair vacations. In all honesty, I just now pulled “A Year in the World” back off the bookcase for another go around.
I came to this page just to take a quick look, had a quick anticipation-high when I saw that you are presently in California on tour, quite specifically in my area of Newport Beach on Friday and Saturday, only to be crushed (while I literally was pulling out my credit card to reserve a spot) to see both days are sold out. My poor timing. Rats! I would have loved to have been at the lecture. For me, your books alone were the initial opening-of-the-door to all things Italy. An art and architecture history major in college, in pursuits of returning for graduate work, I’m now seriously considering Italian Studies with passion. Thank you, for so many people who have read your words, just a reminder — as if it was really needed! — you and your work has helped inspire and direct. Simply beautiful.

I and my wife Simone are your big fans. Your book and movie “Under the Tuscan Sun” are part of our life and are an example of overcoming difficulties and courage to face new challenges, which are always present in our lives.
We will be visiting Italy in the period March 27 to April 4, 2010. We have already included in our itinerary the town of Cortona. We would like to have the opportunity to make a quick visit, take pictures and have your autograph. Please let us know if it will be Ok.

    Ciao Francis,
It was wonderful meeting you last night at Warwick’s Book store. I loved when you read a chapter from your book. Now when I read, I can hear your voice in my head. Your descriptive observations about everyday life are inspiring in so many ways,(I have a pot of cannelini beans cooking on the stove to make your Tuscan white bean and kale soup). Now that I have learned you were a poet, I understand why your writing leaves such a visual sense memory and conveys your deep feelings of place, time and the essence of life so beautifully. You have also started dreaming about my 4th trip to Cortona. We had a wonderful visit last fall, however, I don’t seem to be able to stay away too long. Thank you for the wonderful evening.
    Sincerely,
    Beverlee – with two E’s :-)

    Frances,

Am looking forward to reading your new book. I am sure that it will transport me back to Tuscany as your previous books have. As a photographer, I truly enjoyed In Tuscany. Bob Krist’s lyrical images really brought to light the quintessential beauty of this unique part of the world. I wish you best of success with “Every Day”.

On another note, and please forgive me for using this space for this purpose, I will be in Tuscany this first week of May to prepare a photographic workshop. To this effect, my travels will be taking me to Cortona which I have yet had the pleasure to visit. Please tell, is it possible to visit Bramasole as I would greatly enjoy the opportunity to include photographs of your beautiful residence and gardens in my collection of images.

    Thank you!

Frances, your talk at the sold-out Newport Beach library event was as inspiring as your books. Grazie.

Under the Tuscan Sun, both book and movie, In Tuscany, and Bringing Tuscany Home, all gave me the inspiration to ‘live’ in Tuscany for three months. I visited Cortona every week absorbing what I learned from you. It was a life-changing experience. Grazie mille for all of it, and for signing my book.

We were at the Newport Beach Library on Friday night and very much enjoyed your talk. I wanted to have my book signed and say hello but the line was a little too long. We have been to Tuscany twice and are going again this summer. We have rented a villa in the Chianti region – near Castelina & Radda. I would love to see Cortona. Is it far? I found it interesting that you are from the South and love Tuscany. I am from the South (now a Californian) and could go to Tuscany every year. We have many friends going with us this time to celebrate my birthday & our 30th anniversary. I am reading “Everyday in Tuscany” now and it adds to my excitement regarding our trip. Thanks for writing about one of our favorite parts of the world. Jane Alexander

I loved Under the Tuscan Sun and look forward to your new book. My daughter and I won a trip to Florence this past Nov. and had a great time with our own private tour guide. We ate at trattorias and osterias to try to get as much authentic food as possible. Lots of locals at the small places we found and we had a great time. Love Italy! Good luck on your book tour – I know you will be very busy.

Just a side note. I loved the Ribolitta and am determined to try my hand at it. The day after we got back from Italy, a package with a cookbook I won arrived and when I opened it to see what kind of recipes it had, it magically opened to a recipe for ribolitta!

Just like another writer’s comment I am curious if you ever are going to have a tour around Europe. Just ordered here in Amsterdam your new book. I am very anxious to read it. Also I want to express my compliments for this site. As a mean of faster contact. I tried to send you a letter in 2006, but never knew if it finally had arrived.
In that letter I wanted you to know that you writing inspired me to change my carreer from banker to wine merchant.

Anyway, now I know where to find you.

    Ms. Mayes,

Not exactly a comment to the first day of Spring although I enjoyed the blog entry. Here in the desert Southwest, we are full of Spring wildflowers, Poppies, Daisys, Bluebells, etc. Due to El Nino this year we had exceptional rains which only occurs every 15 years or so. Of course this also includes plenty of weeds in the yard areas. For some reason these are not as beautiful as those that grow wild in the open desert areas.

Lastly, I tried to contact you via different means to get in contact with your tour guide Ewelina from your Poland trip. My wife and I will visit Ugoszcz the end of this month to research her family also emigrated from this small town to Rushford.

    Thanks,

    Greg

I just finished reading, and enjoying thoroughly, “Every Day in Tuscany.”
A comment on one statement in the book (I put this here because this Website says to contact you via these comments): One page 46 you say, “On the steps of the Madonna’s throne, the polyptych is signed Lucas Signorellus Pingebat. I suppose ‘Pingebat’ must be Latin for painter…”
Actually, it’s a verb; it means “he painted (it).” It’s exactly like the use of the verb “faciebat” in the Stradivarius labels which read “Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis Faciebat Anno…” meaning “Antonio Stradivari made it at Cremona in the year….” There’s much more to be said about the word, e.g., why Signorelli and Stradivarius used the imperfect rather than the perfect tense (which Guarnieri used in his labels), and how the past participle of the verb “pingere” is “pictus,” the obvious source of the English word “picture.” But enough of that. Again, I enjoyed “Every Day in Tuscany” as much as I have enjoyed your previous books. It gives us who haven’t been able to go to Italy in recent years a very welcome vicarious visit.

    Dear Ms. Mayes,

While that far I only read one chapter from “Under the Tuscan Sun”, I already can say that I like this book and your style of writing. The story flows smoothly and peacefully reminding a flow of sun in a summer day.

I would like to ask you a question about this bit: ” They love it but it’s downhill now in comparison to the four armoires from that nutty contessa.” I am not sure I catch the reference you obviously put here. It’s probably something historic but definitely is among the things unknown to me. Who is that “nutty contessa” and what are those “four armoires”?

I’d appreciate getting an answer either from you or from people posting here.

    Thanks a lot,

Frances, hi, I’ve seen the movie several times, have the DVD and every time I see it it’s a special experience. I’ve watched the DVD in all the languages available. I’m now reading the book Under The Tuscan Sun and am amused at how the film was derived from your book which is so different. Love the book. It’s fascinating. I can’t cook. Maybe I’ll learn something from it. I would love to come to Cortona to meet you. I would love to come to Cortona anyway. I’m a foreigner, English mother tongue, have been in Rome for centuries, am crazy about Italy like you.
Maybe you’ll reply to this e-mail, maybe not. Do you allow people to come and visit Bramasole? I hope you’re enjoying the Spring weather and your trees are out in blossom in Toscana like my terrace here in Rome. All the best, if you’re not in Italy at the moment, get back here soon. It’s beautiful at the moment. A big hug. K
