Where To Go When
January 19th, 2012
Now that trip-planning season and winter dreaming are intersecting, I want to recommend two big, coffee-table books. You won’t be packing them in your suitcase, but perhaps will copy lots of info from them. As you see, I wrote a foreword for the Italian one. It’s just a brief note. The real work was not mine!

I hate it when stickers that won’t come off are on my books! Mars the careful cover. Here’s Italy. No sticker.

Where To Go When: Italy and Where To Go When: The Americas are both published by DK. They’re organized by month, with suggestions for that time of year. The information is concise and useful, there are great photographs, and the editors have found many surprising or unknown places to lure us. This is a spread on Puglia.

And Panama, a February suggestion, looks good to me.

The Americas book really lures me. There are so many places I have not seen south of the border. A trip to Central America and Peru remains one of my top travel memories. I’ve never been to Brazil or Argentina, or so many other places.
These books are magnetic!

Amazing!!! What an exciting new concept!!! Who would have ever thought of magnetic books??? The perfect thing for reading in the kitchen!!! Put them on the refrigerator – or anything metal – and read, read, read!!! Magnetic cook books would be a boon to us cooks!!! Here’s hoping your cookbook will be magnetic too!!! Hopefully, they will not disturb my pacemaker should I fall asleep with one on my chest… Thanks for the info!!!

Oh the Italy book looks so enticing… but can we handle yet more enticement from that marvelous country that already has us visiting multiple times each year? I’m sure it will find a spot on our coffee table though…
Thanks for telling us about it!
We have not yet been to Argentina either, and it is on our list! Tango in Buenos Aires, anyone? ;)
Dear Anne,
If you want to come to our country, maybe you should check this website http://www.m-rtours.com I have to say this is mine, but I also should say that we love very much our work and we are proud of everything we do with travelers.
Come to visit us! You can write to my address marisabergamasco@m-rtours.com
I hope to receive your news soon!
Marisa
I enjoy DK books for their larger-than-life quality photos. We have several in our home library, most of which have been worn with use. I know my kids would enjoy the “Americas” book but I would love “Italy”. Peru has always interested me. The women there seem so sure of themselves and they wear the coolest hats! My mother-in-law visited Peru a few years back and brought me a hat like they wear but, somehow, it doesn’t look as good on me. I guess I need to be walking a llama for the full affect! Thanks for sharing these books – Kate
Frances, other than Italy, what has been your favourite European country to visit?
Katherine–Greece, Portugal, France, Spain–oh, hard to say! Frances
Dear Frances,
remember I invited you to come to Argentina? I know for sure that you should start thinking about that… We have wonderful places here and fascinating people to meet… Come soon… we are waiting for you… Come to Buenos Aires, you must do something to bring your lovely books to our bookstores!
Big hugs,
Marisa
Marisa–I hope to go to Brazil and Argentina next year. This year is too busy. . . Thanks–Frances
And you have never been to Norway, have you? You are welcome to The House in the Woods any time.
Grazie! I have long wanted to go. I have a good friend in the south of Norway. Cheers! Frances
Hi France, thank you so much for sharing these two beautiful books. I am especially interested in visiting Pulglia during our upcoming trip. Always like to see new towns and cities when in Italia. In the meantime, I am waiting expectantly for the release of your cook book. My neighbors just gave me a huge bag full of fresh lemons from their tree, and I need a good recipe to use them in. Perhaps Limoncello….
My parents always joke with me that I have seen all the big places in Europe but few places in America. I count my blessings that I am 24 years old and I have been all over Italy, my favorite, been to Paris, Ireland, and all over Spain. I have never even seen the Statue of Liberty. Sometimes we need to look at our own backyard for a great trip
Hi Frances,
You mentioned Spain as one of your favorite places to visit, and after living in Seville for seven years, I have to agree. The Spanish, especially the Sevillanos, have a knack for relishing the present moment, whether it’s eating a sliver of exquisite ham or singing snatches of flamenco music while walking down the street or just making time for a siesta every day. There are 3000 tapas bars in Seville, and I’m doing my best to get around to all of them! Cheers, Karen
I too are thinking about where to go when and am planning a trip to the beautiful Veneto region of Italia. Having been insipired by your first two books I was wondering what the name of the restaurant you stayed at at in Lorregia as this sounds like a wonderful thing to do. My internet searching has yielded nothing and so I have turned to the source of my inspiration. Thanking you in anticipation. Steve the Blacksmith
Steve, sorry I don’t remember. I loved the one in Mira. I think I wrote about it on the blog. Frances
Hi Frances,
I’m currently on my gap year and am going to be spending some time in Andalucia and Vienna in March. Do you have any recommendations for places with good, soulful food?
P.S.-I have a question about a book idea, and I’d love to get your professional opinion if possible! :)
Peace, Meagan
Meagan, follow your nose! I haven’t been in Andalucia for a few years and am going to Vienna for the first time in June, so–I’m no help. Have fun! Frances
